Parents provide relevant medical needs, allergies and emergency instructions before attendance and update changes. We agree an individual plan when necessary, including who can provide support, equipment, consent and any training. We do not promise medical or nursing care beyond our competence.
Our club standard is suitable paediatric first-aid cover and equipment throughout sessions, journeys and outings, with cover for breaks and an emergency that removes a worker from the group. The manager verifies qualifications, expiry dates and the actual rota before opening. Staff follow their training and emergency-service instructions; a policy is not first-aid training.
If a child becomes unwell, keep them comfortable and supervised, assess urgency, contact parents and arrange safe collection when necessary. Call 999 for a serious emergency without waiting for parental permission or a completed form. Inform parents as soon as possible, send relevant care information with the child and keep adequate cover for the rest of the group.
Families should keep children home when too unwell to participate safely or where current infection-control guidance requires exclusion. We use current UKHSA advice for the illness concerned and explain return arrangements. Staff maintain hand hygiene, cleaning and ventilation. Public-health advice is sought where an outbreak is suspected. Health exclusions must be evidence-based and proportionate.
Medicines
Accept medicines only with clear instructions and the necessary written authority. Record the child, medicine, dose, route, time, expiry, storage and prescriber instructions where applicable. Medicines should be in their original labelled packaging. Resolve unclear or conflicting instructions with the parent and an appropriate professional before routine administration.
Only trained, authorised workers administer medicines within competence. Check the child, medicine, dose, route and time against the plan; record administration immediately, including the worker and any refusal, omission or error. Follow the club’s checking procedure and notify parents. Errors or adverse reactions require prompt medical advice, with 999 when urgent, incident recording and manager review.
Store medicines securely and at the required temperature, while keeping emergency medicines immediately accessible to the trained adults and child as agreed. Take them on every outing and hand them over reliably between staff. Self-management is agreed individually and recorded. Never share medicines or leave emergency medication behind. Return medicines directly to the authorised adult and record the handover.
Accidents and first-aid treatment are recorded and communicated to parents appropriately. Serious injuries are reported immediately. The manager considers RIDDOR and any applicable regulator notifications on their actual criteria; not every minor accident is externally reportable.
